Wash cold, dry low, and stretch damp cotton back to shape. A practical diagnosis for S S and L S basic tees that shrink, fade, or twist after laundry day.
Quick answer
Wash cotton basic tees in cold water on a normal or gentle cycle, then dry on low heat or air-dry. Heat is what shrinks and fades cotton, so the fastest fix is turning your dryer down and pulling tees out slightly damp. If a cotton tee already feels tight, mist it, stretch it gently back to shape, and lay it flat to finish drying.
Symptom: the tee fits, then it doesn't
Shrinkage in a cotton basic tee rarely happens all at once. The first wash might take a centimeter off the sleeve, the next one tightens the body, and by the fifth laundry day the hem sits higher than it used to. Long sleeve tees show it faster at the cuffs and forearm, where the fabric has more length to lose. If the print itself looks fine but the tee feels smaller, the problem is heat and agitation, not the graphic.
Likely cause: heat, agitation, and fiber stress
Cotton jersey knit relaxes and tightens with moisture and temperature. Hot water opens the fibers, and a hot dryer locks them into a tighter arrangement. The same heat breaks down the plastisol ink used on many graphic tees, which is why a shrunken tee often looks dull at the same time. Overloading the machine adds friction that pulls knit loops out of shape, and hanging a wet heavy tee by the shoulders can stretch the neckline while the body shrinks.
Corrective action: reset your wash and dry routine
Turn both tees and long sleeve tops inside out before they go in the machine. Wash on cold with a normal amount of detergent, and skip fabric softener because it coats cotton and traps odors. If your machine has a gentle or casual cycle, use it for printed tees. Dry on the lowest heat setting for 10 to 15 minutes, then pull the tee out while it still feels slightly damp and lay it flat or hang it by the hem. That last step is where most of the shrinkage is prevented.
- Cold wash: 30°C or lower for cotton jersey
- Low dryer heat: short cycles, remove damp
- Air-dry flat or by the hem, never by the collar
- Wash graphic tees inside out to protect the print
When to stop and choose another option
If a cotton tee has already shrunk two sizes or the body has twisted permanently, further washing will not bring it back. Stop trying to rescue it and move it to a layering role or a sleep tee. If you need a tee that holds its shape with less fuss, look for a pre-shrunk cotton jersey knit, which has already been relaxed before it reaches you. Pre-shrunk fabric still shrinks slightly with heat, but far less than untreated cotton.
Shrinkage diagnosis: match the symptom to the fix
- Tee shrank after one hot wash: The cotton fibers tightened from heat. Rewash cold, then stretch the damp tee gently back to shape and air-dry flat. One hot wash is usually recoverable if you act before the next dry cycle.
- Sleeves and cuffs keep getting shorter: Repeated dryer heat is the cause, especially on long sleeve tees where cuffs hold moisture longer. Switch to low heat and remove damp. If cuffs have already tightened past comfort, size up on the next long sleeve tee.
- Print looks cracked and the tee feels tight: High heat has damaged both the cotton and the plastisol ink. Cold wash inside out and air-dry from now on to stop further damage. Once the ink cracks, care can slow it but not reverse it.
- Body twisted and hem is uneven: Agitation and hot drying have pulled the knit out of alignment. This is not fixable with washing. Retire the tee or keep it for layering; choose a pre-shrunk seamless body next time.

- Team Tee: 200 Gram 6 OZ. 100% US Cotton Pre Shrunk Jersey Knit with a seamless body and taped neck and shoulders. Pre-shrunk cotton and a seamless body mean less twist and less surprise shrinkage, so cold washing and low drying keep the fit stable.
- ICON LS TEE: 200 Gram 6 OZ. 100% US Cotton Pre Shrunk Jersey Knit with a seamless twin needle 7/8 inch collar and taped neck and shoulders. The reinforced collar and taped shoulders resist stretching when you hang a damp long sleeve tee, which is the usual cause of a droopy neckline.
